Stephen Fleming is Chief Commercialization Officer at Georgia Tech. His appointment led a reorganization designed to streamline the handling of intellectual property, accelerate the licensing of technology, and make the Institute’s resources more readily accessible to business and industry. He has 13 years of private equity experience at the general partner level. Prior to his venture capital career, he spent 15 years in operations roles at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Nortel Networks, and LICOM (a venture-funded startup).

Mr. Fleming also serves on the Boards of Trustees for the Spiritual Living Center of Atlanta and for Tech High School, a charter high school emphasizing science, math, and technology in urban Atlanta.

Manager, Technology Evaluation

Keith McGreggor has more than 24 years of commercial, enterprise, and military software and product development experience, with senior level positions at Lockheed, Apple Computer, and Yahoo. A serial entrepreneur and committed angel investor, he has founded or co-founded five software companies, among them the first artificial intelligence company in the Southeast. He is a two-time Georgia Tech graduate, with master's and bachelor's degrees in Computer Science from Georgia Tech.

Roberto Casas joined the VentureLab team in January 2005 with over 15 years of business development and marketing experience in corporate and start-up environments. His career includes roles at Procter & Gamble, Philips Electronics, and MeadWestvaco, prior to co-founding a virtual entertainment venture and the MIT Enterprise Forum of Atlanta. He has an MBA degree from MIT and a BS degree in electrical engineering from Los Andes University in Colombia.

Hill.jpg Ben Hill
(Assists innovators in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, College of Management and Georgia Tech Research Institute)

Ben Hill focuses on the commercialization of renewable energy research and clean technology. He was co-founder and board member of Cirronet, Inc., a wireless products company that was acquired by RF Monolithics. Prior to joining VentureLab, Hill worked for the Advanced Technology Development Center, where he started the successful incubator program at the Georgia Centers for Advanced Telecommunications Technology. In addition to his VentureLab responsibilities, he serves as an adjunct professor in the Georgia Tech College of Management. Hill holds an M.B.A. from Emory University and an Master of Arts in Religion from Yale University.

SBIR GEORGIA
Mills.jpg John Mills
Program Manager

John J. Mills, P.E., as director of the SBIR Assistance Program for the State of Georgia, assists companies in understanding the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (SBTT) programs and in submitting quality proposals to these federal research and development funding sources. He has worked with more than 100 firms in supplying information on the SBIR/SBTT programs and reviewing proposals, and he has given workshops from Ohio to Florida.

Mr. Mills has been with Georgia Tech for more than 20 years, with previous responsibilities as manager of technical marketing for Georgia Tech’s NASA Southeast Regional Technology Transfer Center and as director of Georgia Tech’s Columbus regional office. Prior to Georgia Tech, he held positions in engineering and management in industry and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A registered Professional Engineer, Mr. Mills earned his bachelor’s degree from Georgia Tech and his M.B.A. from Armstrong Atlantic State University.

Marketing Manager, SBIR Assistance Program

Connie Ruffner is responsible for marketing/promoting Georgia’s SBIR Assistance Program and the federal SBIR program throughout the state. She also consults with companies, providing guidance the program appropriateness, topic identification, proposal preparation, and commercialization. Previously, she worked for NASA’s Southeast Regional Technology Transfer Center, TMP and Solvay Pharmaceuticals.

She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Mary Washington and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of South Carolina.

Biosciences Project Manager, SBIR Assistance Program

Julie Collins serves as the Biosciences Project Manager assisting biotech and life science firms applying for federal SBIR/STTR awards. In the past two years, she has assisted more than 50 companies with their SBIR/STTR submissions. Prior to joining Georgia Tech, Collins was a graduate student in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Emory University, where she earned her Masters in Molecular Genetics and she has also worked in academic research at the VA Medical Center in Atlanta. She holds a B.S. in Biology from Georgia Tech with a certificate in bioengineering from Keeble College, Oxford University.
